Shelly Fryer Reflection
Shelly Fryer is an example of a teacher who really shows she is for her students. She wants her students to feel comfortable in her class and feel free to learn. She is also very aware about what other schools do around her. For example, a first year teacher from Chicago, Dwayne Reed has a welcome music video for his class that has such a positive message. Shelly decided to play it for her students and they absolutely fell in love with it. Because of this, she decided as a special treat to them, to work with the music teacher and have the kids record their version of it together as a class. It's called "Welcome to Room 108." Included in the video is a picture slide show of Mrs. Fryer's students with their recorded song in the background. The students loved being a part of something like that. This idea is a great tribute to learning and a great way to incorporate music, learning and a positive message about school all together. http://www.shellyfryer.com/2017/06/04/inspired-by-dwayne-reed-welcome-to-room-108/

The next post I read by Shelly called "Building Relationships with Students" was a very inspiring take on students and their need for play in the classroom. In this blog, there was talk about the Global School Play Day and how much it really benefited the kids. This quote really stood out to me from Shelly, "The beauty of Global School Play Day is that teachers step away from directing activities, and students come up with things they want to play and do"(Fryer). She went on to talk about how the a lot of imaginative play was going on. At the end of the day card games and board games were being played by the students. http://www.shellyfryer.com/2017/03/20/building-relationships-with-students-gspd/
Shelly found iPad projects for the kids to do, in order to familiarize them with the technology and she uses it as an educational tool. Art is also becoming more important, but not just the enhancement of it. Art is becoming more integrated and blended with other content areas. She also suggests that with all of the new technology coming in, it's important that organizations like A Plus help define what is important for teachers who are trying to mix technology in with their lessons. The apps should amplify creativity, she explains. She has such a big heart for children and so many great ideas. She is truly amazing. |
